Ernest Hello est né à Lorient le 4 novembre 1828 dans une famille de petite bourgeoisie, le père magistrat, sceptique en religion, la mère, pieuse catholique. Très tôt Ernest se fait remarquer par ses dons intellectuels, son caractère absolutiste assoiffé de vérité métaphysique, et un net penchant pour la méditation solitaire. On crut un moment l'orienter vers le barreau, comme son père, mais au sortir de l'adolescence Ernest se convertit au christianisme, et dès lors il refuse d'envisager d'autre carrière qu'au service de Dieu.
